Whether you are a mother who has been too busy to devote herself to fashion and style or an expecting mom who doesn’t know how to dress with the new changes to her body, with just a few perfect mix-and-match pieces, you could have a functional wardrobe that will make getting dressed in the morning a breeze. Let’s face it – you already have a never-ending list of things to worry about, clothes shouldn’t be one of them. So, here are a few wardrobe basics ever mom and mom-to-be needs in order to have a simple and versatile wardrobe:

A few tanks

Three or four basic tank tops or T-shirts in neutral colors are a really good starting point for building your mommy closet. Whether you wear them alone or you layer them under cardigans, sweaters, jackets and coats, there are countless ways to pair these simple items with your pre-pregnancy clothing. They truly go a long way towards creating more versatility in your wardrobe.

Tunics are not necessarily maternity wear, but they are a great option for pregnancy that you can easily wear even after the baby is born. Not only are they roomy and let your tummy breathe, but there are also a lot of beautiful options and creative ways to style them – relaxed and loose, over skinny jeans or leggings or tucked into a high-wasted skirt.

A pair of jeans

While the rubber band trick may get you through the first few weeks, maternity jeans are an unavoidable part of any pregnancy wardrobe. Invest in one or two pairs of quality maternity jeans, relying on styles that work well with most items in your closet. Opt for a straight, slim or skinny leg, as these cuts look flattering on everyone. Jeans like Mavi maternity pants, with their subtle washes and detailing, are the best option for a wardrobe basic you will get a lot of wear out of throughout your pregnancy.

A large tote bag

Every woman needs a good tote bag in her life. If you find one that is just for you and buy it in a color that complements the palette of your wardrobe, you can use a tote bag for anything from work and overnight trips, to the pool and the gym, or even as a fancy diaper bag.

Comfortable leggings

Whether you are a new mom or an expecting one, everyone needs a comfortable pair of leggings in their closet. While maternity leggings are always a good option, you could get through the pregnancy with a pair of regular leggings with a looser elastic band that you could fold under your belly. Look for a pair made out of a very stretchy material to ensure maximum comfort and always opt for a neutral color, so you can get a lot of wear out of them for years to come.

A pencil skirt

A perfect combination of comfort and style, a black pencil skirt should find its way into everyone’s closet. You can easily dress this item up or down, wear it with a blazer, jean jacket or a cardigan, ankle boots, tall boots, heals, or even with sneakers and a basic T-shirt. A pencil skirt is a truly versatile piece you could wear to almost any occasion imaginable.

A form-fitting dress

Even if body-con dresses don’t complement your personal style, when it comes to pregnancy, fitted is often more flattering. A curve-hugging fabric shows off your bump beautifully, while still giving you ease of movement. Whether you dress it up with some heels, boots or a blazer, or dress it down with a pair of sneakers and a cardigan or a denim jacket, you will get so much use out of a simple form-fitting dress.

A throw-it-on jumpsuit

Jumpsuits are the ultimate cute outfit solution. A tapered cut will give you the illusion of slimmer legs, while a tank style could get you through all of the seasons if you layer long-sleeve T-shirts or thin sweaters underneath it during the colder months. Bear in mind that if the fit and cut isn’t right, a jumpsuit could be very uncomfortable during pregnancy, so always opt for a stretchy fabric that fits in all the right places.

With these few basic and versatile pieces, any mom and mom-to-be can build a functional and fashionable wardrobe that will make dressing in style the easiest thing in the world.
