The Most Awesome Date Night Ideas in Cape Town

December 1, 2020

Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with mountains, the ocean and urban landscape rolled into one. Because of all of this, there are so many romantic things to do in Cape Town. We’ve rounded up date night ideas that are both fun, romantic and promise to please.

NOTE: As we continue to battle the pandemic, the availability and continuity of the below events/ideas are ever-changing. Please check directly with the vendor/venue before arriving. Practise social distancing and keep safe. If you prefer to stay inside, here’s some stay at home date ideas.

You can find the best of the perfect first date ideas and romantic activities right here. We’ve put together a list of the best Cape Town date night options for all couples. From students just starting out, to couples looking for something different to do on your 50th anniversary. There’s something perfect and unique for everyone.

1. Couples Wellness & Pampering

For a very different Cape Town date idea, and a great chance to unwind with your partner, try a couples massage or yoga retreat! You’ll find wellness spas in every neighbourhood in the city, with all manner of interesting yoga treatments, pampering and massages.  Book yourself in for an overnight or weekend full of wellness and relaxation at a South African yoga retreat.

And if a couple’s massage isn’t enough on its own to help you unwind, more and more people have been using CBD Oil to get in a relaxed and in-touch mood on date night. Try it before your massage for an ultra-relaxed time. If you’re interested, you can find out more on this website.

If you love the idea of a spa date but don’t love massages, don’t worry! You can also get a manicure and pedicure (yes, men enjoy them too), or try a body wrap.

2. Clifton 1st Beach

If your perfect date is lying on a white-sand beach together eating ice-cream, and running into the ocean, visit Clifton 1st. This luxuriously beautiful spot is a short drive from the city centre, and has one of the most aesthetic ocean views in the whole of this coastal city!

Spend your daytime date lazing around in the sun, sharing a picnic, and smearing sunscreen on each other. It’s always a great time. The coastal drive is also lovely and makes for a wondeful end to the romantic trip.

3. Sunset Hike up Lions Head

Lion’s Head is Cape Town’s most popular short hike! It’s right next to the centre of town and is an easy, laid-back walk. Especially compared to other hikes in and around Cape Town, which range from a trek up Table Mountain to a multi-day hike in the Cederberg nearby.

This is a great first date idea, especially at sunset, when you can watch the sun go down with a view of Table Mountain, the ocean, and the beautiful Twelve Apostles.

However, be prepared for crowds though – unfortunately, it won’t just be you and your partner up here. Everyone wants to see that gorgeous view!

4. Dine at The Twelve Apostles Hotel

This gorgeous hotel has unparalleled views over the ocean when the sun sets, and of course, over the mountainous Twelve Apostles. Enjoy 5-star cuisine in a perfect location, with luxurious decor and great service.

This is a perfect place to go for an anniversary date or just something classy. Book early to ensure a table. The hotel also has a spa so you can combine this date with the previous one if you want a night full of luxury.

5. Long Street by Night

For a range of fun things to do in Cape Town at night, head down to Long Street. The famous street has many great restaurants serving international cuisines, bars with live acts, and clubs with cheap alcohol and good music. Start your evening off with a braai, a few drinks, and then go explore the night.

So if your idea of the perfect date is an uproarious time on the city’s best party street, this is where to go! You can plan your date as you go along, with an evening stroll down the street to find your favourite spot, and go on from there.

6. Boulders Beach

Go for a stroll and a swim at Boulders Beach, home to a colony of African penguins! You can watch the little penguins as they go about their busy lives, take photos, and even join them in the water.

While ideal in summer, a sunny winter’s day is also a great time to go on this daytime date. Bring a picnic, or explore the surrounding area for a nice restaurant.

7. The Labia

The Labia is one of the best low-price romantic dates in Cape Town! You can either watch a film (students and senior citizens pay less) or get the ‘dinner and a movie’ combo. This is a deal they have with some nearby restaurants, where you can sit and enjoy a meal before going to the cinema to watch a movie!

The cinema shows some really interesting Indie and African films outside of the mainstream, but you can also find American films.

So grab a vodka slushie (finally, a cinema with an alcohol licence), or a mug of Gluhwein, pick a few snacks, and enjoy the film!

8. Picnic at Kirstenbosch

The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is one of our favourite fun things to do in Cape Town for couples. The beautiful gardens are extensive, with many beautiful exotic plants and cute ducks! The skywalk is very photo-worthy, and a great place to get a photo of the pair of you.

Bring a picnic along, and enjoy lounging on the grass and snacking while you admire your surroundings. Adding to this, you can also have lunch at the restaurant.

Then move on to their restaurant, and enjoy delicious food with a view over the hotel’s lovely garden. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy one of Cape Town’s gems without staying there.

10. Cape Town Comedy Club

For a night full of laughs, go to the comedy club! You can get drinks to make the performers even funnier, and have a laugh over a great meal.

There are different performers every week, with a great cast of South African comedians with unique senses of humour. More so, the club has a great vibe, making it a perfect date night Cape Town.

11. V&A Waterfront

The Waterfront is one of Cape Town’s most popular tourist destinations. But if you’re locals just looking for something a little fancier than your usual date night, it’s also a great romantic date destination. Also, it is easier than you think to get around South Africa.

Furthermore, there are so many fantastic top-quality restaurants at the Waterfront mall. You can also visit the Watershed Market, next to the mall, and find delicious foods and handcrafted goods for a more laid-back date experience.

12. Table Mountain Cableway During Sunset

Described as one of the 7 Nature Wonders of Nature, Table Mountain offers absolutely gorgeous views over the Cape Peninsula. This summer, why not take advantage of their Sunset Special and treat your loved one to a ride up or down the Cable-car as a date idea. This special is available to South Africans only at just R150.00 a ticket. Remember to bring along an instant film camera for some cute selfies as the sun goes down.

13. Grab a Craft Beer or Drip Coffee at a Local Market

There are a ton of great markets to browse about through in Cape Town, especially during the festive seasons. A lot of them have taken extra precautions to enforce social distancing and safety measures. A beautiful way to spend a pleasant, balmy evening in Cape Town would be at the Earth Fair Market, Spier Craft Market, Bay Harbour Market, or the Neighbourgoods Market.

14. Dine Out at a Seaside Restaurant

Whether you’re a local or a tourist, the seaside restaurants in Cape Town with their uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean is hard to turn down. What better way to treat your loved one in the Mother City by enjoying a delicious meal by the sea? There’s a lot of options – try Bobo’s Brasserie, Tiger’s Milk Camps Bay, The Dunes, On The Rocks, or the Cape to Cuba.

Another fun date night idea is to cook for your partner! Sometimes, the best place to relax and spend time together is at home.

Ultimately, there are so many lovely date night ideas in Cape Town, it’s difficult to choose between them all. Do you have any great date nights you’d love to add to the list? We’d always love to hear from you.

The Twelve Apostles Hotel has an amazing view! That would be a great date option, and combining dinner with a spa treatment there would be a fantastic way to splurge for my boyfriend’s upcoming birthday. Thanks for all the beautiful pictures and ideas!

I didn’t know there were so many lovely spots in Cape Town. I was able to visit the place but only for a short seminar where I had to present my study during graduate school! It was quite short and I wasn’t able to explore. But I will definitely keep this all in mind if ever I’m in the area again.
